The Widal test is a serological test used to diagnose typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever, which are caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi. The test detects the presence of specific antibodies (agglutinins) in the blood that are produced by the immune system in response to an infection with these bacteria.

The test works by mixing the patient’s serum with antigens derived from Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi. If the patient is infected, the antibodies in the serum will react with the antigens, causing agglutination (clumping). The presence and intensity of this agglutination help determine if the patient has a typhoid or paratyphoid infection.

The Widal test is widely used in clinical laboratories for the diagnosis of typhoid fever, particularly in areas where the disease is endemic. While it is useful for diagnosing acute infections, it is most effective when used in conjunction with clinical symptoms and other diagnostic methods.
